The Book "Introduction to Psychiatry" for Medical, Nursing and Paramedical students and General Practitioners is in its fourth edition. The first edition was published in 1976, the second in 1983, the third in 1996 and the fourth and the present one in 2007. It is a big achievement to have brought this latest edition after three decades of the first one. To have persisted in writing this book at periodic intervals and updating it at every edition with the prevailing and current knowledge, adding appropriate chapters in the field is commendable. The latest edition includes some revised chapters written by some of the students of Dr.Varghese and these include topics like Psychotropic drugs, Affective disorders, Electro Convulsive Therapy and Legal Psychiatry.

New chapters on Classification in Psychiatry, Delusional disorders, Liaison Psychiatry, Sexual Disorders, Psychosocial aspects of Leprosy, Emotional intelligence, Childhood autism, Eating disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Neuro Psychiatric aspects of aids have been added.

It is interesting to see a chapter on Therapeutic Relationship with emphasis on factors like (a) Personality of the therapist (b) Professional skills of the therapist (3) Communication skills of the therapist (4) Technique in communication for sensitive areas, with clear examples provided. The personal and vast experience of Prof. Varghese and Dr. Annamma Abraham of over five decades in this field comes across clearly in this chapter.

Irrespective of knowledge, one could acquire in reading various text books of Psychiatry, to be a good doctor and mental health professional and especially a therapist, if one does not posses these qualities all our efforts at gathering information in the field of mental health will be a waste. I particularly, liked this chapter as it brings in the essence of Psychiatry and Therapeutic Relationship in a nut shell.

A passing mention is made about Rehabilitation under the chapter "Management of Schizophrenia". I would have liked to see a brief chapter devoted to "Psychosocial Rehabilitation". This method of management, if introduced early, for those beginning to learn Psychiatry will help them to understand the concepts and appreciate the need for using such methods and see this as complimentary to medical management, especially for Chronic Mental Illness.

Barring this, I think it is a well written book, easy to read and very useful for Undergraduates, Nursing students and General Practitioners who are interested in the field of Psychiatry. This should definitely be recommended for all Undergraduate students, both medical and paramedical, who are interested in Psychiatry, in particular, and mental health, in general.

I deem it an honour to be asked to do the review of this book written by Dr.Abraham Verghese and Dr.(Mrs) Annamma Abraham, both of whom who were my first formal teachers in Psychiatry way back in 1971-1972 in Christian Medical College, Vellore.
